5 Fun & Free Activities for ADHD Kids Beyond the Classroom
As a parent of a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), you may find that traditional classroom learning is not enough to keep your child engaged and interested in their studies. This can be tough – especially when you’re busy and already struggling for free time in the midst of a hectic schedule. Fortunately, there are many ways to help your child learn outside the classroom and supplement her education. Today, Vegan Design shares five activities you can do at home with your child to support their learning and help set them up for success.
Utilizing Natural Attractions
There are countless natural directions to explore in every corner of the world, maybe even starting with your own neighborhood.
Chances are good that you have a plethora of options to explore within a short driving distance, too. From beaches, lakes, and nature parks to botanical gardens and zoos, these attractions provide an opportunity for kids with ADHD to take a break from their studies while also engaging them in hands-on learning experiences.
For example, visiting a beach may teach them about ocean life, or going to a lake could provide insight into different fish species. Whatever the attraction, make sure it’s engaging and entertaining enough for your child to stay focused and learn something new.
At-Home Science Experiments
Science experiences make learning fun and exciting for kids of all ages. With easy-to-follow instructions, parents can set up simple experiments at home with items found around the house or purchased from a local store. Such experiments allow children to explore scientific principles firsthand and develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, creativity, and more. Plus they are sure to have fun!
Backyard Activities
Your own backyard is an excellent place for children with ADHD to learn practical skills while getting fresh air and physical activity outside. From homegrown science experiments to building birdhouses or setting up outdoor games (e.g., badminton, croquet, scavenger hunts, etc.), these activities stimulate the senses while teaching responsibility and coordination. And everyone in the family can enjoy them!
Additionally, many cities offer free educational programs – such as martial arts classes and ecology clubs – which are ideal for children needing additional stimulation beyond the classroom setting. Participating in these programs not only teaches valuable lessons but also allows children with ADHD to interact with other kids in similar circumstances, often leading to greater self-esteem and confidence-building opportunities over time.
GOING TO MUSEUMS
Museums provide another excellent opportunity for hands-on learning experiences outside of school for kids with ADHD, and many have free days or give discounts for children. Local museums often host special events like interactive exhibits that give kids an opportunity to get up close and personal with history or science projects. And if you live nearby and can walk, all the better!
These events can help bring abstract concepts from textbooks alive before their eyes! With so much variety out there – from historical artifacts like dinosaur bones or ancient Egyptian art pieces – there’s something interesting out there bound to capture your kid’s attention.
Enrolling in Online Education Classes
Finally, if your child needs more personalized instruction than school alone provides, consider enrolling in online education classes yourself. You might be surprised by how much you can learn through an online degree program, and you can study at your own pace so you don’t have to compromise work, family, or personal commitments. For instance, if your child has a knack with technology, visit Code Profs for tips on teaching them how to code, which is a skill that can open a lot of doors when they get older.
By holding your own skills and knowledge, you can equip yourself to guide your child to academic growth. Take a look at the various online programs out there to engage in learner development, instructional practice, and specialty courses. Make sure any university you consider is accredited and offers affordable tuition.
Summary
There are so many ways that parents of ADHD children can help support their kids' education from home. From utilizing natural attractions or backyard activities to taking online education courses, opportunities abound for stimulating learning experiences tailored specifically toward aiding those struggling with ADHD. With a bit of effort, you can open up unprecedented possibilities for furthering your child’s academic success.
